"Memento Mori - Death's Release"
"Memento Mori," or, "remember you will die" is a Stoic saying that, for me, grounds me in reality while also allowing me the freedom to celebrate every moment of life, delightful or nasty- because this life is temporary, it is my mission to drink in the essence of it at all costs, while I still can.
"Death's Release"- as far as we know, we really don't KNOW what will happen when we die, until we actually die. According to Christianity, we will visit heaven or hell. According to the Tibetan Buddhists, we will encounter Bardos and decide what we'll get up to next life. Spirits visit us after humans are gone, various vibes float through the ethers of certain locations, providing certain moods... We have no idea whether we will continue to experience, or whether experience just stops.
Either way, it promises to be a brand new experience that we've never seen before. Perhaps it breaks up the mundane way we've lived our lives, perhaps it stops the pain of illness and decay. We cannot know until it happens.
The fear of death causes people to do all kinds of things- from ignoring it altogether, to going through existential crises that cause chaos or bodily harm, to being much too hypervigilant, to stockpiling weapons or worrying about natural disasters that we can't control...
What would happen if we thought of death as the crowning achievement of our lives, or the ultimate adventure that lays unknown miles ahead, what if we accepted it rather than being afraid of it?
Life looks more beautiful when we remember the briefness of it. Life is juicy, exquisite, miraculous. It is up to us to face life and death with gratitude.
